Happy August and back to school for many kids. I am a guest on many podcasts. In fact, I am interviewed 2-3 times per week. These podcasts range from entrepreneurial, health, wellness, medicine, science to self-help. One thing I have noticed in nearly all these podcasts’ interviews is everyone asks me the same question: Why do you do what you do? That repeat question made me really think about this. Why am I working so hard, sometimes 7 days a week 10-14 hours per day, traveling over 150,000 air miles every year all around the world, especially with so much conflict, resistance, people trying to shut me down, put up fake and fraudulent websites that appear to me my company, legal letters nearly every week? Then it hit me. What I am doing is making a difference and is changing people’s lives and consequently changing the world.
A Legacy of Firsts in Nitric Oxide Innovation
If you are doing something that is meaningless, trivial and is not disruptive to anyone or any business, then people leave you alone. You are not a threat to anyone. Ever since I started nitric oxide research more than 25 years ago, I have felt pressure to be first. First to discover, first to publish important findings, first to develop a safe and effective nitric oxide therapy. In many cases, I was the first. I developed the first and still only solid dose form of nitric oxide gas. I developed the first salivary test strip to measure relevant metabolites in saliva. I was the first to develop a topical nitric oxide for skin care and beauty to generate nitric oxide gas on the surface of the skin. I was the first to develop intellectual property based on my nitric oxide discoveries out of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston that was productized and generated revenue. In fact, today I remain one of the top revenue producers in the history of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. I don’t say this to impress you or to be braggadocios, but rather to impress upon you this is a personal journey for me and continues to motivate and inspire me to keep going, despite all the challenges.
Why the Mission is Personal
It’s personal to me because I have witnessed my technology save my dad’s life several times from infected non-healing wounds when all the best doctors said it could not be done. It is personal to me because all my academic colleagues said what I was doing was dangerous, could not be done and was impossible. It is personal to me because every day when I wake up I get to read dozens of texts, emails, customer feedback, thanking me for changing their lives and in many cases saving their lives. It is personal to me because I have had competitors come after me, weaponize the legal system, sue me and my companies, make threats on my life, hire investigators to follow me, trespass on my personal property, making my family feel unsafe. It is personal because I have been accused of scientific fraud, breach of confidentiality by my superiors in Academia only to be found innocent and fully exonerated by a full investigation by the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. It is personal because I left academia to become an entrepreneur to make sure my discoveries and technology made it to market that represented the best science and innovation not just deceptive marketing and hyperbole that bastardized the science, like most companies out there. It is personal because I realize very few people have the opportunity to make discoveries and a career that has a legitimate chance to change healthcare and medicine and consequently change the world. I do not take these responsibilities lightly nor take these opportunities for granted.
Standing Firm Against Industry Resistance
You may read the above and say to yourself, why endure all of that? Why not just quit and take life easy? The answer is simple. It is because that is what they want me to do. For many companies out there, both nutraceutical and pharmaceutical companies, the scientific truth is an existential threat to their current business. Since I reveal the truth, I am viewed as an existential threat to their business. If consumers begin to understand the true science of nitric oxide, then these companies realize consumers will no longer purchase their products. Many of these companies are large companies generating hundreds of millions of dollars per year with an enterprise value of more than one billion dollars. They do not want you to know the truth. In fact, some of these companies have full time employees whose single job is to troll me, report what I say or write and then have their lawyers send nasty threatening letters to my lawyers. They put up fake, fraudulent websites appearing to be my company sites. Our lawyers send dozens of cease-and-desist letters every week. We have unauthorized sellers on Amazon, eBay and other sites in an attempt to steal customers from us. Their goal is to make my job and my life so difficult and expensive that I will eventually give in and give up.
I live by the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” The good news is that I survived their best attacks and I am still standing and my companies are thriving because the truth will always prevail.
Combating Misinformation in the Age of AI
I will continue to educate the masses on the science of nitric oxide and will always lead with the best products based on real science. However, I must also correct the record on all the misinformation perpetuated by many companies out there. In this age of Artificial Intelligence, the misinformation can be regurgitated by AI and mislead many people. This deceptive and fraudulent marketing and misinformation can endanger lives and lead to a loss of confidence in the promise of nitric oxide-based products and drug therapy. If you are currently taking a nitric oxide product or just learning about nitric oxide, I ask for your trust in me and my products. I will never abdicate my role as CEO and Chairman to anyone because I refuse to let profits and revenue take precedence over good science and products that actually work. As the nitric oxide market grows, more companies will enter so this will likely get worse before it gets better. Do your research on companies. Look for the leadership of the company. Who is the CEO and President? What is their background? Are they rooted in science or just marketing folks running a business.
